Planning a Subaru Road Trip Near New Orleans LA The “Old Fashioned” Way

Technology is wonderful for getting stuff done quickly, but when it comes to travel, the use of GPS, navigation systems and voice commands does have its drawbacks. One of the best parts of a road trip near New Orleans or anyplace, is getting there and the experience of finding your way. Because GPS can take away from the fun, why not plan your trip using a big, bona-fide, accordion folded paper map!
Reading a Map
Being able to navigate and read a map is a "use it or lose it" skill, and unfortunately, there's a whole generation of people who may have never actually learned how to use a road map since they grew up with cool new tech. But research shows that drivers who rely solely on GPS commands have more difficulty determining where they've been or even remembering which route they're taking compared to drivers who use actual hand held, paper maps. No matter if you absolutely love navigation systems, having an "old-school" map in your car and knowing how to interpret it will be a major advantage when your GPS or smartphone can't get a signal.
Old Fashioned Navigation
Do you remember the last time you grabbed a traditional road map to use for plotting a course? Not a map app, not a GPS, but a real map made of paper? If you can't remember, we've got some ways to sharpen up those skills by planning a road trip near New Orleans, and celebrating Read a Road Map Day at the same time.
  • Treat yourself to a new map! You could print one from the internet, but to make the most of this experience you'll want a folded-up, honest-to-goodness road map. Buy one at a gas station or stop by a local rest area or visitor center and pick up a free one! Invest in a Road Atlas (bookstore purchase) and you'll have highway maps for all 50 states.
  • If you've never read a road map, check it out and give yourself time to learn how to read its symbols and notations. If a zombie apocalypse happens, it'll be a great skill to have!
  • Plan a short trip to a neighboring town for practice. Try to use a different route than usual and chart it on your paper map. No cheating!
  • Bring someone to be your navigator, who'll read the map and direct you on where to turn, which exit, etc. It won't be like using your sat-nav, so stop thinking that!
  • You navigate while someone else drives. Don't be surprised if you see things you've never noticed before.
Road Trip near New Orleans LA: What to Bring
There are so many interesting places and cool things to see right here in southern Louisiana and neighboring Mississippi that you wouldn't believe. With lingering COVID concerns still on your mind, but nice weather beckoning, now is the perfect time for a road trip to experience what our local destinations have to offer.

If you plan your trip around biking, hiking, camping, or other outdoor activities, you'll have equipment to bring with you. Your Outback or Forester can pack a lot, but a Subaru Accessory Receiver Hitch (aka trailer hitch) can really increase your cargo space without even towing a trailer. Thule® makes a hitch-mounted bicycle carrier, for two or four bikes, that slides right into the hitch.
Subaru Capabilities
You can also haul an assortment of gear thanks to the roof rails on your Subaru, possibly the most versatile piece of equipment on any Subaru. There are no less than nine accessories that mount to those rails on the 2021 Crosstrek alone! For additional soft items there's even an attachable rooftop basket.
No matter where you decide to take a road trip near New Orleans, on April 5th we urge you to put your electronic devices aside and open up a traditional road map. And if you're looking for a new vehicle to get you on your way, Baldwin Subaru has some great deals on both new and used Subaru vehicles. Use your map skills to take a little road trip to 1730 N. Highway 190 in Covington to see what's new!
